The ALS Ice Bucket Challenge may have occurred last summer, but the Lowell Spinners, the Class-A affiliate of the Boston Red Sox, are hoping to continue to raise awareness for ALS with an upcoming giveaway that features the challenge’s creator.
The team will hold an ALS Awareness Night with Pete Frates, a 30-year-old former Boston College baseball captain, who was diagnosed with ALS in 2012. The first 1,000 fans to arrive at the ballpark July 26 will receive a figurine of Frates holding a bobbling ice bucket above his head to commemorate his role in the phenomenon, according to the team. The ALS Association credits that phenomenon with generating $220 million worldwide for the cause.
“We are honored to be able to host this special night and honor both Pete and his family, who have been tireless in their support of creating awareness for ALS and working toward a cure,” said Spinners president and general manager Tim Bawmann. “We hope this is a night to remember for the family, but also a night that can raise awareness and dollars to support the cause.”
Additionally, 1,000 bobbles will be available for a $20 donation starting July 27. Donations will benefit the Pete Frates No. 3 Fund that Frates founded that supports his medical bills, and efforts to raise awareness and find a cure for ALS.
“Pete and his family have really been inspiring as he continues to fight this terrible disease,” said Bawmann. “Their approach to life is something that everyone should hope to achieve and we are honored they have partnered with us for this incredible event.”
